Reversibility of managed PostgreSQL

Reviewed on · View on GitHub

The managed PostgreSQL service is designed to guarantee reversibility, that is, the ability for the customer to retrieve their data and migrate to another solution without lock-in.

Exportable data

All data stored in a PostgreSQL cluster can be exported using the standard tools of the PostgreSQL ecosystem.

Reversibility tools

Logical export with pg_dump

Use pg_dump to export a database in SQL format:

pg_dump -h <host> -U <user> -d <database> -F c -f backup.dump

To export all databases:

pg_dumpall -h <host> -U <user> -f full_backup.sql

Restore

Restore the data to an external PostgreSQL server:

pg_restore -h <new_host> -U <user> -d <database> backup.dump

Numspot backup

The backups created through the managed service are compatible with standard PostgreSQL versions.

Open formats

  • The data is in the native PostgreSQL format, compatible with any PostgreSQL distribution.
  • The backups are in the standard PostgreSQL format (pg_dump / pg_restore).
  • The connection protocols are standard (PostgreSQL wire protocol).

Exit procedure

  1. Export the data using pg_dump or pg_dumpall.
  2. Deploy a PostgreSQL server on the new platform.
  3. Restore the data using pg_restore or psql.
  4. Update the connection strings of the applications.
  5. Check the consistency of the restored data.
